The recent development of a £12 million Innovation Centre in Huddersfield will play a key role in continuing to bolster the University’s prestige. The centre will provide a forum for new collaborations between academia and industry, which will allow university research to make an impact on regional business.

The presence of this site will encourage continued growth of the core competences of the University, meaning continued demand for places, further increasing its global reputation for excellence in research and education.

Appointed as the prime mover behind Huddersfield’s project to create this new innovation centre, the serial entrepreneur Alan Lewis commented that ‘There must be renewed respect in the education system for people who have skills and make things - this will lead to innovation and new products which in turn will create employment and, in this regard, the University of Huddersfield is leading the way’. The innovation centre has been endorsed by many key business individuals, including celebrity entrepreneur, Theo Paphitis. The collaboration will have great impact for the university’s reputation, offering students better access to the business world and creating a more entrepreneurial student mindset.

Patrick Allen, the centre’s managing director commented on Huddersfield university’s involvement in the project: ‘This is really quite foresighted on their part. Their factory might no longer be cheek-by-jowl with the university, but they can clearly see the value of being associated with the Innovation Centre’.

Yorkshire universities have also just recently secured over £5 million in order to bridge the gap between research and business. The highest regional share of funding went to the University of Sheffield, who secured £2.48 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The money will support projects that will closely knit together academic research and industry.
