Brits 'feel it's a buyers' market'

The vast majority of Britons believe the housing market over the next year will favour buyers rather than sellers, new research shows.

According to a survey by the Halifax, only 9% of people feel positive about buying and selling in the near future, suggesting the UK property market may remain quiet for some time yet.

And although 56% of people think the next year will be a good time to buy a house, just 11% believe it is the right time to put one on the market.

Halifax said that the nation was gradually becoming more optimistic about price rises, although most people still believe any price changes within the coming year will be relatively small, with two thirds expecting fluctuations of 5%.

Six out of 10 people believe one of the biggest challenges is finding a deposit, and one third said mortgage availability remains a large obstacle.
