Scottish councils could soon be given the opportunity to issue enforced sale powers, as part of government proposals to tackle long-term empty properties.
These orders are among those outlined in a new Scottish Government consultation, which will seek to bring the number of empty homes in the country down from 25,000.
Enforced sale powers would let councils sell on properties which fall into the long-term vacant category.
Such powers could be granted to local authorities if they were unable to persuade a property owner to bring their home back into use. Councils would also need to demonstrate that their plans were in the public interest.
Compulsory Purchase Orders are currently the only options open to councils when it comes to the restoration of neglected UK property.
Along with Scottish ministers, Shelter Scotland and the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership are set to collaborate on the new consultation.
Commenting on the proposals, Scottish housing minister Keith Brown said: "Owners faced with the prospect of an enforced sale of their property, would, I am sure, see sense and bring the house or flat back into use."
