Buy to let property investors might be surprised to learn that Poole, not London, has the least affordable rooms to rent in the UK.
Residents living in the Dorset town are paying £398 a month on average, or 26.8% of the typical net income of £1,665 a month, while a room typically costs £520 in London, equivalent to 26.2% of people's pay after taxes, Easyroomate.co.uk revealed.
Newport in Wales was the cheapest with average rents for a room costing £280, £85 lower than the national average. This figure is less than a fifth (18%) of average incomes.
The average price of a room available to rent in the UK is £365 per month, which equates to 21.9% of the average monthly salary.
Yorkshire, meanwhile, appears to be the cheapest county in the UK for rents, with York, Leeds and Sheffield all among the top 10 most affordable areas in the UK for rentals.
Jonathan Moore, director of Easyroommate.co.uk, said: "With the economy's recovery looking sluggish at best, and the ongoing mortgage famine driving growing demand for limited rental space, rent increases will continue to outstrip salary growth for the foreseeable future."
