Twin tourism potential may boost Cape Verde

Cape Verde is now well known as a growing tourism attraction, becoming less of a hidden gem and more a highly visible jewel in the crown as visitor numbers rise each year. With flights directly from Britain only starting in the last couple of years, the UK has been a part of that expansion.

To some, this growth may seem like the stuff of classical sun, sea and sand holidays, with the archipelago located in the tropics and therefore offering plenty of all these things.

But, proprietor of Cape Verde Travel Ron Hughes has suggested, the tourism situation may be more diverse than that, with eco-tours becoming more popular in the lush interiors of some of the islands. The result may be that those investing in holiday property may have two markets to serve, rather than one.

He explained: "Much depends on the geographical islands, the layout of the archipelago and the differing geography of the islands [which] lends itself to many styles of tourism. When it comes to the white sandy beaches, yes that provision of that holiday sector is obviously a tremendous potential. When you look at the ecotourism holidays - the mountain walks, the cultural life, the music, the history and so on, that's found the other side of the archipelago."

This, Mr Hughes noted, is something those advertising the islands to tourists have yet to communicate effectively enough. It may therefore be reasoned that when they do, more visitors will arrive as a result, alerted to the fact that Cape Verde has more than just beaches and sunshine.

For example, it will not be a bucket and spade or a swimsuit that visitors to the island of Fogo will pack. This lush island has not just fauna and flora but Mount Fogo, an active volcano that last erupted in 1995. In this case hiking boots will be the order of the day for those climbing its ash-coated sides to the 2,829 m (9,281 ft) summit, the highest in these islands. Eco-tourists will also want to stay in places that are more convenient for exploring inland areas to discover the local wildlife and scenery.

So for those who are looking to invest in Cape Verde, it could be that the way targets for growth in the tourism industry will be met is by developing the message about the variety Cape Verde offers. In turn, it may also be said that the property investment sector may do best by responding to developments in this area.
