Lovely Larnaca ideal for investors, says expert

Those looking to invest in overseas property will no doubt look to take up as much expert advice as they can, while also sometimes - but not necessarily always - checking their prospects out for themselves.

When it comes to Cyprus, British interest is always high, with its widespread use of English, commonwealth and now European Union links, plus its large expat British population. But choosing the right place is not necessarily straightforward, as any expert on the country will know.

One such specialist, managing director of Cyprus Property Dreams Andrew Creswell, noted that there are many issues to be considered. Firstly, there is the fact that Cyprus remains a divided country, with the unofficial Turkish northern Cyprus operating as a de facto separate country from the ethnically Greek south. However, he noted, this may be about to change due to ongoing talks about a new settlement, one that could see people on either side of the divide reclaiming their old homes.

He warned: "One should not buy in the North, especially now as there may be a settlement this year and property and land would be reclaimed by rightful owners."

Of course, the south still offers plenty of variety. There are large cities and small villages, beaches, historic sites and even mountains that attract enough snow in winter for skiing. But the best place, he suggested, is Larnaca, stating: "The Larnaca area offers the best value for money and excellent facilities."

Mr Creswell said that this was particularly true for those emigrating with young families to the island. But for investors a purchase made in the area may be more likely to be aimed at the buy-to-let holiday market.

For this, Larnaca appears well suited. According to the Discover Larnaca portal, the city by the sea offers plenty of history as one of the world's oldest cities, a warm climate with its palm-tree lined streets, plenty of beaches, numerous restaurants and bars and on top of all this, the crucial element of an international airport.

Good news for investors on the airport front is that IACA Airlines, a body that represents 38 airlines involved in the country, has urged the government to do more to improve incoming airport services for the airlines, with lower costs and better infrastructure being key developments the group is lobbying for, traveldailynews.com reports.

Should such canvassing have the desired effect, Larnaca airport and the other main hub at Paphos could be helped to improve, making airline access to the country better and bringing in a greater number of tourists. Such a move could make investments in Larnaca and other Cypriot locations better still.
