Atlantic advantage

The western seaboard of France has not been short of attention from Britons, if one includes in that the north-westerly areas that face across the Channel. Much has been written about the potential for property in the area since the advent of the new, faster Eurostar service, making possible the (for some) ideal lifestyle of living in relatively inexpensive property in France while commuting to work in London.

Yet it has been suggested that investors looking for the best property bargains should look a little further south, where the sea stretches far out and there are no white cliffs to be spotted through telescopes. The Atlantic Coast has been hailed by Property Wire as one such area.

Biarritz is the place the report singles out as being particularly attractive, since it has plenty in the way of attractions with nightlife, scenery and beaches, yet at the same time the prices are, according to local estate agents, much lower than those on the Cote D'Azur.

James Finch of French Properties for You said: "When looking to invest in France the Atlantic coast is often overlooked. Yet is a vibrant area, not some kind of rural backwater and for the longer term investor good potential. It is the Atlantic equivalent of the Cote d'Azur."

The town has other attractions too. For one, its south-western position means it is close to the Spanish border. This can be attractive for buy-to-let investors as it means the resort will not just offer French food, style and culture but offer the Spanish - and particularly Basque - equivalents within easy travelling distance.

Property Wire mentions that Biarritz is a major surfing location and this is backed up by the Time Out guide to the city, which describes it as "the embodiment of upmarket surfer chic". It also reveals that for the holidaymaker who likes to see the sparks fly July and August provide fireworks in the evenings.

Of course, the sort of property Biarritz offers is one of many kinds amid the wide variety that exists in France, as may be expected in a country that offers both hot sunny beaches and frozen high mountains.

According to Connexion France, the overall French property market has seen prices for overseas buyers fall of late, Homes Worldwide. One feature of this, it notes, is that Britons are often accepting lower offers because the exchange rate becomes favourable when the euros paid for a property are converted back into pounds. This in turn means that buyers can pick up bargains at reduced prices and enjoy a position of strength when negotiating. Whether they do this in Biarritz or elsewhere, this could offer some handily priced deals.
