Advisers praise flexibility of Sipps

Property investment through a self-invested personal pension (Sipp) was given a huge boost on A-Day and it is an investment strategy that is set to experience huge growth in the coming years.

New research from Winterthur Life, for instance, shows that nearly 60 per cent of advisers are expecting to see their business grow by up to 25 per cent in the next six months and 18 per cent expect it to grow by more than 25 per cent.

Along with EPPs and tax free cash changes, it is generally agreed that Sipps will be instrumental in this growth.

According to research from FundsNetwork, meanwhile, 78 per cent of advisers believe that the ability to invest directly into Unit Trusts and OEICs is one of the most attractive aspects of any Sipp.

But property is also seen as exceptionally important, with 63 per cent of advisers citing the ability to invest in commercial property as the most important reason for recommending a Sipp. Direct investment property funds were mentioned by 57 per cent of advisers, while 48 per cent see the option to invest in stocks and shares as important.

The basic conclusion reached by experts from FundsNetwork is that advisers have come to appreciate the sheer range of investment options provided by Sipps when compared to restricted personal pensions that are based on a panel of funds.

"The Sipp debate has moved on - it has evolved from a discussion on the flexibility of the wrapper and its functionality to the investment story," suggests Stuart Meiklejohn, head of propositions.

"The key strength of platforms in providing open architecture solutions, coupled with access to services, means that platforms can fully support asset allocation modelling for pre and post retirement planning.

"Future Sipp survivors will be those offering the broadest choice possible with the added flexibility of being able to invest in wider investment areas as and when required," he added.

Saving for retirement is an issue that is currently receiving more attention than ever before and investing in property is unsurprisingly at the centre of the way that many people hope to achieve this.

Investors are often turning to Sipps simply because they offer a tax-efficient means of saving for retirement, while their flexibility means that people are able to adjust to changing needs and circumstances.

Another advantage is that investors are given the independence to make their own investment decisions, although most also enlist the help of a financial adviser or fund manager. Interest in Sipps has been rising steadily since A-Day and the flexibility offered to investors should ensure that they remain one of the most appealing investment options.
