Young buyers call for solar panels in Spain

While the Spanish property market remains hugely popular with retirees and traditionalists, it is also gaining something of a dynamic edge.

This is perhaps being typified by the high demand for solar panels in Spain, with youngsters dominating the waiting lists for this increasingly popular energy source.

According to the SUR in English publication, the Council of Ministers has already approved a new Technical Building Code that will make the installation of solar panels on new buildings obligatory by 2007.

As in the UK, Spanish property owners have been weighed down in recent years by escalating energy costs and the move towards the use of solar panels has been seen largely as an attempt to combat this. Energy costs are particularly high in Spain because of the climate and the fact that many properties also have swimming pools, meaning that heating water for showers is commonplace.

The report cites the example of Ramon Alvarez from one of the companies now supplying solar panels. He reveals that the number of solar panel units installed over the past year has doubled and there is no doubt that this is going to have a significant impact on the way that many Spanish properties are constructed in the future.

"We have had a huge increase in requests for information on solar energy, especially from building companies and architects' studios. There is also a great deal of interchange of information, techniques, budgets and systems," he said.

Jesus Valenzuela, from a similar company, said that his company had been investing heavily in increasing its production capacity to cope with the demand. He also told SUR in English that the young buyers were the better customers.

"They tend to be more aware of the need to conserve energy, and usually buy their houses first and then install solar panels."

With eco tourism and eco property investment both beginning to have an impact upon the buying habits of people all over the world, Spain's insistence that solar panels are installed on new buildings may prove to be yet another factor that keeps it a step ahead of various other markets in Europe. With utility bills hopefully falling as a direct result of the move, it could also make the cost of living in Spain yet cheaper, which can only be of benefit to those hoping to invest in the country.

A move towards renewable energy will certainly appeal to those concerned about the environment, but the particular importance of this progression is perhaps that it illustrates yet again that Spain remains committed to advancement at all levels.

Whether in relation to the country's policy on energy or simply the quality of life, there is no doubt that the Spanish property market continues to offer some of the most exciting investment opportunities for overseas buyers.
