British entrepreneurs lead overseas Spanish business

British entrepreneurs Spain, long associated with bull dog bars, English breakfasts and egg and chips, are moving upmarket and stimulating inward investment with hi tech business start ups, says research published by leading Spanish employment organisation, the National Self-Employed Federation (FNTA).

One in four self employed workers in Spain are now from overseas, and the largest single group of these is British, says the FNTA. Like many immigrant groups, British businesses are largely set up to serve the needs of their own community, but the skills and services they bring are stimulating technological innovation and growth.

As the nature of the British community in Spain has grown and matured, so have their needs. While in the early days of package holidays, most holidaymakers immediate needs were likely to be familiar food and a social centre – catered for by a pub – now the growth of long term residents, jet to let and investors in property are likely to be more sophisticated and reflect their more established lifestyles.

British managed business services, banking, web provision and IT services and satellite installation are now growth areas across Spain says the FNTA. "British buyers are seeing new opportunities to use their skills," said Terry Walker of Property in Spain.

"We have IT specialists setting up an internet rental sites for the other 400 owners on one beachside development in Costa Calida and another, a keen yachtsman, planning a boat-hire business in the nearby harbour. It used to be a British Pub with greasy spoon breakfasts, now it’s Sky TV installations, websites and accountancy," he added.

Registering as self employed helps foreign born residents to regularise their status in the country and settle in Spain, said Lorenzo Amor, president of the FNTA.

"In five years time, there will be 150,000 new companies set up by immigrants and 300,000 self-employed workers in Spain. Registering as self-employed stabilises their work situation," he said.

Sixty percent of foreign self-employed workers were found in three parts of Spain. Catalonia had the highest number with 26,243, then Valencia with 22,588 and Andalucía with 22,531.

More than half, or 53.5 per cent, came from European Union countries.
Half of these came from Britain (21,177), then Germany (13,579), China (13,293), Morocco (10,970) and Italy (10,661).
